Exciting news for Las Vegas: UNLV welcomes interdisciplinary artist, critic and educator Marcus Civin this July. Marcus Civin joins the College of Fine Arts as Chair of the Department of Art and a professor of art effectively July 15, following 8 years at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA).
Karin Q Miller, I AM GREAT? at theWinchester Cultural Center Gallery,a video installation which explores shifts between self-confidence and anxiety. Participants were filmed repeating the words "I am great" at the prompt of the artist; only their eyes were recorded during these exchanges. As a question rather than a statement, Miller presents the opportunity to discover and examine the correlation between identity and emotion. The project also explores pre- & post-election affects, drawing attention to implications of the 2016 presidential campaign slogan “Make America Great Again” and to personal identifications with its significance. Opening Reception/Artist Talk: Thursday, June 7. Through June 29.

Blue Angel: Between Heaven and Earth,group exhibition at theNeon Museum's Ne10 Studio. The classic mid-century Blue Angel hovered above Blue Angel Motel from circa 1957 until its removal for restoration by the City of Las Vegas in 2017. Designed by Betty Willis, who also designed the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign, the Blue Angel will reemerge for this temporary exhibition before undergoing restoration and will be surrounded by signs from the Neon Museum collection and featured alongside works by Las Vegas artists. Through July 6.

Andrew Schoultz, In Process: Every Movement Counts at theMarjorie Barrick Museum of Art.Fusing museum space with the dynamic energy of streets and skate parks, Andrew Schoultz makes art that asks questions about the reality of contemporary life and global power. His installations and murals juxtapose ideas from illuminated manuscripts, ancient cartography, and the flattened space of Persian miniatures. Through September 15.

Disrupting the Narrative, presents sequential narrative in multiple forms: 2D and 3D, on the page and on the wall, through sculpture, fiber, video, interactivity, and classic storytelling. Artists Shing Yin Khor, Sarah Rose Sharp, Emi Gennis, Zoe Fox, Carl Antonowicz, and Laurenn McCubbin invite viewers to participate in the construction and reshaping of narrative, engaging their mediums to utilize meta-level storytelling, designing objects and stories that can be “read” in multiple directions. Andreana Donahue: essay contributions on Salvation Mountain and the Noah Purifoy Outdoor Desert Art Museum,Desert Destination Log, an A-Z West publication, available at the Hammer Museum and High Desert Test Sites. This publication is available at the Hammer Museum in conjunction with a Hammer Store pop-up curated by Andrea Zittel. Running for a duration of six months, this retail intervention will feature an array of desert-made and desert-conceived products including HDTS publications, postcards, print editions, as well as the beloved annual Gem/Mineral Expo. All proceeds from sales will directly fund non-profit arts programming in the High Desert.

Diane Bush, Cafe Royal Books (UK) is publishing the first of three volumes of her British street photography this July, "Brits, England in the 70s." The series will become part of the permanent collections of the TATE, MOMA and The Victoria and Albert Museum. Her participation with Half Moon Gallery in the 1970's will be recognized in the Radical Visions and archive website launching June 15 at Four Corners Gallery, London.
Congratulations toJacqueline Ehlis for launching her artist residency program Raven STAR (Space, Time, Artist Residency) in central Oregon this summer. I'm honored to be an inaugural artist-in-residence! Stay tuned for more details. Also sharing an artist residency I discovered earlier this year through artist Katie Hovencamp: Soaring Gardens Artist Retreat in Laceyville, Pennsylvania.
