What’s Cooking in November with Scrambled Eggs

Scrambled Eggs’ ambition to galvanize the local art scene endures. This month, the artist collective’s full roster of happenings includes the November 15th opening reception of the installation SKETCH PARTY, and, this weekend, there will be back-to-back gatherings: an artist talk with local artists on November 29 and Scrambled Eggs’ monthly pop-up at Market in the Alley on November 30, featuring a special ceramics exhibition and silent auction.

Earlier this year, the local artist collective Scrambled Eggs started setting up a vendor booth at Market in the Alley to showcase and sell local artist prints, zines, stickers, and more. The space serves as a monthly creative conclave. In essence, the pop-ups act as a rivulet that is an integral part in enriching the valley’s burgeoning arts and in keeping people engaged each month.

The almost yearlong project at Market in the Alley emerged thanks to SE’s dedication to producing community events and booth grants offered by Market in the Alley. The weekend events host and support small local businesses and creatives. There are vendor booths whose wares range from jewelry, skin care products, and crochet, and, during Dyslexia Awareness Month, artists teamed up and hand-painted articles of clothing to raise funds and support the cause.

In addition to selling art, every pop-up provides free art supplies in collaboration with T.W.Y.N. (Take What You Need) – a small local organization collecting and redistributing art supplies for free. In giving back to the creative community, some artists also donate part or all of the proceeds from their art to the collective to fund future projects.

For November’s pop-up, there is a special one-day event in the works. Emmanuel Muñoz, the founding curator of Scrambled Eggs, has recently been finding inspiration in ceramics. It all began after Scrambled Eggs’ successful show hija/e/o/x/(s) de su— in partnership with The Holland Project, a Reno based arts and music initiative and Nuwu Art Gallery and Community Center in Las Vegas – that featured ceramic pieces by L.A. based ceramicist Kristy Moreno and others. These works were the inspiration behind the upcoming ceramics pop-up and silent auction. The show will feature work by over a dozen local artists including Jennifer Kleven, Misalydian, Quindo Miller, Cesar Piedra, Rebecca Reyes, Miguel Rodriguez, Rocio Ruiz, Mary Sabo, Sierra Slentz, Sabrina Solis, Clarice Tara Cuda, Tina Tsoi, geo, Dan45 Hernandez, and Alexys Keller.

A day ahead of Market in the Alley, an artist panel discussion, “Ritual Forms: 5 Artists on Practice and Obsession,” will take place at Kaleidoscope Studio with Las Vegas artists Sam Ganados, Alisha Kerlin, Krystal Ramirez, Miguel Rodriguez and Chad Scott. Each Scrambled Eggs reception I’ve attended has felt intimate. In this peculiar town, where spectacle has a monopoly,  a close-knit creative community spawned; the only existing and veritable art here comes almost exclusively from DIY artist-run projects or spaces. So, I anticipate a similar experience. 

Scrambled Eggs’ output over the course of the last couple of years demonstrates their organizational and community savvy, creating a platform that is approachable for both emerging and established artists. The collective has been drawing sizable crowds to their events, like their recent SKETCH PARTY (they received over 80 submissions for their open call). The show's popularity lies with their sketch theme. People who have never exhibited before feel encouraged to submit work with less developed subject matter while other artists are simply sharing their process. Furthermore, zines released at the reception were in high demand and ran out immediately.

So now that the heat has finally left us, it's a good time to get out and be a part of what they are doing as they raise funds for future projects. Drop by their booth and artist talk downtown this weekend as the month closes out. 

“Ritual Forms: 5 Artists on Practice and Obsession” will be held at Kaleidoscope Studio (8 E. Charleston Blvd.) on Friday, November 29th from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Scrambled Eggs’ pop-up will take place at Market in the Alley in the Arts District (Imperial Ave. & Main St.) on Saturday, November 30th from 11 am to 4 pm. SKETCH PARTY continues at Fremont Photo Co. (901 E. Fremont St. #110) through December 13, 2024.
